Sandesh Media Group, publishers of Gujarati newspaper Sandesh, has launched a weekly newspaper entitled Agro Sandesh, on July 4. The tabloid is dedicated to the food industries of Gujarat.

The new agricultural weekly has a cover price of Rs 6 per copy, with an annual subscription of Rs 275. Launched with an initial print run of 3 lakh copies, the company aims to play 5 lakh copies by the end of September 2011.

The content mix of the 24-page tabloid-sized Gujarati weekly will include news and views on agriculture, dairy, livestock and Gujarat's cooperative sector, political news affecting the socio-economic lives of farmers, national, international and state. Level developments, farmers' success stories, research and developments, new projects, information on agricultural product processing, market rates and trends, and forecasting and time orientation.

Apart from this, Agro Sandesh will also carry information on various schemes of central and state government, agricultural technology and the export of agricultural products.

In a statement, Falgun Patel, President and Managing Director, Sandesh, says: "Agro Sandesh will contribute positively to the development of Gujarat farmers. Agro Sandesh will cater to all information needs of farmers as well as information that will facilitate They to go Global. "

The group started working on the tabloid six months ago. "As part of our social responsibility, we thought it made absolute sense, especially from the perspective of the farmers, because there is not enough coverage of their requirements and relevance in the newspapers," says Patel.

The group conducted a survey in Gujarat at several agricultural exhibitions to measure the need for such a newspaper. Apart from this, some advertisers and agencies were also polled to gather comments on the need for a specific product for agriculture.

"We thought advertisers would be interested in a constantly expanding but focused audience (rural and semi-urban farmers with high purchasing power), and therefore, they will certainly welcome the idea as a great advertising vehicle," adds Patel .

As far as the distribution strategy is concerned, the group is using the existing network of Sandesh agents, and new agents are appointed where there are none. Interestingly, the group is tying up with traders, who deal in multiple agricultural products.

The weekly will be published in Ahmedabad, and will be distributed in 26 districts, 226 talukas and 18,000 villages. The new product distribution centers will be the group centers in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Bhuj.

To promote the weekly, the company is using Sandesh extensively to carry out its announcements. It also plans to organize events for farmers and related communities in the future.

For the record, Gujarati Sandesh's diary was started in 1923. The diary is now published from five centers, including Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar.
