INTRODUCTION


What is Agricultur?
Agriculture is the science, art and industry of managing the growth of plants and animals for make use of by humans. In general, agriculture includes soil cultivation, growing and harvesting crops, raising and AGRICULTURE IN CHHATTISGARH AND YOUTH INTERESTS Management).

Modern Agriculture
Engineering and technology is heavily utilized in modern agriculture. Biological and physical sciences are also advancing agricultural production. Fields requiring specialized understanding of agricultural engineers includes, but not limited to Irrigation, Drainage, Conservation, and Sanitary Engineering.

One area of agriculture where plant production is advancing rapidly is Hydroponics; a method for growing plants without soil – Usually in an inert media such as Rockwool and fed re-circulated, Oxygen and nutrient rich water solution.

Because Hydroponics is not dependent on soil, this advance plant cultivation method will allow many people in extremely dry regions like parts of Africa, for example, to cultivate plants for food and other resources. Hydroponics can also increase food production -a concern for the growing population.

Plant genetics and breeding offers nice benefits to farm productivity. Genetics has also turned livestock breeding into a science.

Agricultural Chemistry
Agricultural chemistry is associated with other important farming concerns like fertilizer application, insecticides or pest control, fungicides, soil composition, agricultural products analysis, and nutritional requirements of farm animals.

Packaging, Processing & Marketing
Science has also revolutionized the way we pack, process and market agricultural products. For example, dehydration and quick-freezing have increased farm products markets (Food Processing, Preservation, Meat Packing).

Technology
Agriculture used to be a laborious task and still is, however, late 19th- and 20th century technological advancement has simplified much of the backbreaking toil of farming. Moreover, mechanization (Agricultural Machinery) has greatly increased the efficiency and productivity of farming.

Although agriculture has evolved and advanced in many ways, Animals like horses, llamas, alpacas, oxen and dogs are still utilized on farms to cultivate and harvest crops, till, and transport products to markets in many parts of the world.

AGRICULTURE IN INDIA

The Indian Agriculture sector is the largest sector in the Indian economy contributing 25% to the GDP of the country as well as accounting for 13% of Indias exports.

In the initial years in India, agricultural activity was limited to the production of food grains and a few cash crops such as cotton, sugarcane and jute, but recent years has seen a remarkable shift in the agricultural scene, including increasing diversity in a range of products and greater sophistication with the creation of critical infrastructural facilities like cold storage, refrigerated transportation, packaging, quality control etc. The Indian agriculture sector is now set for a leap with the introduction of new technology like IT and biotechnology.

India’s potential to become a leading player in the agriculture sector is proved by the fact that it already has the makings of one. It is the largest producer of milk, fruits, pulses, cashew nuts, coconuts and tea in the world, second largest producer of rice and wheat in the world, and fourth largest in coarse grains. India is also one of the largest producers of cotton, sugar, sugarcane, peanuts, jute, tea and an assortment of spices. India is poised to become the world’s food basket on the back of a number of Government initiatives and investment opportunities across various areas of agriculture.

The spectacular story of Indian agriculture is known throughout the world for its multi-functional success in generating employment, livelihood, food, nutritional and ecological security. Agriculture and allied activities contribute about 30% to the gross domestic product of India.

With arable land area at 168 million hectares, India ranks second only to theU.S. in size of agriculture. A well-developed agricultural research system, a significant area of almost 60 million hectares under irrigation and an increasing productivity in major crops enable Indian agriculture to become a globally competitive player. The United Nations estimates that with assured irrigation, India's food grains output can increase SIX times within five years- enough to feed two planet Earths!

India is among the largest vegetable oil economies in the world
India is the largest producer of Tea in the world
India is the second largest producer of Fruits in the world
India is the largest producer of Milk in the world
India is the largest producer of Coffee in the world


AGRICULTURE IN CHHATTISGARH


Chhattisgarh, the 26th state of the Indian Union came into existence on November 1,2000. Cultivable land area is 58.81 lakh ha & forest land area is 60.76 lakh ha with more than 2.07 crore population. About 80 percent of the population in the state is engaged in agriculture and 43 percent of the entire arable land is under cultivation. Paddy is the principal crop and the central plains of Chhattisgarh are known as rice bowl of central India. Other major crops are coarse grains, wheat, maize, groundnut, pulses and oilseeds.


The region is also suitable for growing mango, banana, guava & other fruits and a variety of vegetables with 44 percent of its area under forests it has one of the richest bio-diversity areas in the country. It has abundant minor forest produce like Tendu leaves, Sal seed, etc. Medicinal plants, bamboo, lac and honey are other potential money earners for the state. Chhattisgarh has embarked on a concerted plan to increase double cropped areas, diversify the cropping pattern and improve incomes from agro-based small-scale enterprises. In order to unlock the true potential of agriculture sector in the state, government is paying special attention towards better management of its water resources.

To reduce the farmers dependence on rainfall, government is working towards increasing the irrigation potential of the state. It is estimated that approximately 43 lakh hectares can be potentially irrigated covering 75 percent of the entire cropped area in the state. Ravi Shankar Sagar Mahanadi project, Hasdeo-Bango, Kodar and others are some of the important irrigation projects in the state.

YOUTH INTERESTS TOWARDS AGRICULTURE IN CHHATTISGARH
As Chhattisgarh is developing in the area of Banking, Services, Industries and Business sector, there is also an area of agriculture where youth should take interests and they should find opportunities in it. There are number of opportunities in agriculture by which youngsters can find a better way for their career. A survey has been made to find youth interests towards the agriculture in Chhattisgarh by taking 50 people randomly from several parts of Chhattisgarh like Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Dhamtari, Champa and Balod.People who were selected for the survey regarding same are from different categories of jobs available in Chhattisgarh including agriculture.
