A Wallace tree is an efficient hardware implementation of a digital circuit that multiplies two integers, devised by Australian computer scientist Chris Wallace in 1964. Multiplication is one of the operations most commonly used in arithmetic. The multipliers based on the Wallace reduction tree provide an efficient area strategy for high speed multiplication. A number of modifications have been proposed in the literature to optimize the Wallace multiplier area. This paper proposed a reduced area Wallace multiplier without compromising the speed of the original Wallace multiplier. The designs are synthesized using Synopsys Design Compiler in 90 nm process technology. Synthesis results show that the proposed multiplier has the lowest area compared to other tree-based multipliers. The speed of the proposed and reference multipliers is almost the same.
