A light-dependent resistor (LDR) or photo resistor is a device whose resistivity is a function of incident electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, they are light sensitive devices. They are also called as photo conductors, photo conductive cells or simply photocells.
They consist of semiconductor materials that have high strength. There are many different symbols used to indicate an LDR, one of the most commonly used symbols is shown in the figure below. The arrow indicates that light falls on it.
Advantages
LDRs are inexpensive and available in many sizes and shapes. Practical LDRs are available in a variety of sizes and package styles, the most popular size with a face diameter of approximately 10 mm. They need very little power and voltage for their operation.
Disadvantages
Very inaccurate with a response time of tens or hundreds of milliseconds.
