In computer engineering the architecture of the computer is a set of rules and methods that describe the functionality, organization and implementation of computer systems. Some definitions of architecture define it as the description of the capabilities and programming model of a computer, but not a particular implementation. In other definitions, the architecture of the computer involves the design of the instruction set architecture, the design of the microarchitecture, the logical design and the implementation.
The goal is to design a computer that maximizes performance while keeping energy consumption under control, costs are low relative to the amount of expected performance, and it is also very reliable. For this, many aspects that include the design of the instruction set, the functional organization, the logical design and the implementation must be considered. The implementation involves integrated circuit design, packaging, power and cooling. Design optimization requires familiarity with compilers, operating systems with logical design and packaging.
