A scientific calculator is a type of electronic calculator, generally, but not always handheld, designed to calculate problems in science, engineering and mathematics. They have almost completely replaced slide rules in almost all traditional applications, and are widely used in education and industry.
In some contexts, such as higher education, scientific calculators have been replaced by graphing calculators, which offer a superset of the capabilities of scientific calculator and the ability to graphically represent data input and write and store programs for the device. There are also some overlap with the financial calculator market.
Scientific calculators are widely used in any situation where quick access to certain mathematical functions is required, in particular those who have been once watched in tables, such as functions or trigonometric logarithms; they are also used in situations that require calculations of very large or very small numbers, as in certain aspects of astronomy, physics and chemistry.
They are very often required for classes of mathematics at secondary school of undergraduate at the University level, and are generally either permitted or required on many standardized tests covering math and science subjects. as a result, many are sold on educational markets to cover this demand, and some high-end models include features facilitating the translation of a problem on a page of manual input of the calculator, for example by providing a process to enter a problem in as it is written on the page using simple formatting tools.
