A lathe is a tool that rotates the workpiece on an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deforming, orienting, rotating, with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry axis.
The lathes are used in turning of wood, metallurgy, spinning of metals, thermal spraying, recovery of pieces and works in glass. The lathes can be used to shape the pottery, the most well-known design is the potter's wheel. Most properly equipped metallurgical lathes can also be used to produce most of the revolution solids, flat surfaces, and screw threads or propellers. Ornamental lathes can produce three-dimensional solids of incredible complexity. The workpiece is generally held in place by one or two centers, at least one of which can be moved normally horizontally to accommodate varying lengths of the workpiece. Other methods of securing work include fastening work on the axis of rotation using a mandrel or clamp, or a faceplate, using clamps or dogs.
Examples of objects that can be produced in a lathe include candle holders, gun guns, cleats, table legs, bowls, baseball bats, musical instruments (especially wooden wind instruments), crankshafts, and camshafts.
