In satellite communication, the signal transfer between the transmitter and the receiver is done with the help of the satellite. In this process, the signal which is basically a modulated microwave beam is sent to the satellite. The satellite then amplifies the signal and returns it to the receiver antenna present on the earth's surface. Thus, all the signal transfer is happening in space. Thus, this type of communication is known as spatial communication.
The use of satellite communications has spread and is ubiquitous across the country for applications as diverse as television, DTH, DSNG and VSAT broadcasting to exploit unique capabilities in terms of coverage and reach. The technology has matured substantially in the last three decades and is being used on a commercial basis for a large number of applications. Most of us are touched by satellite communication in more ways than we realize.
The potential of technology for society applications continues to fascinate ISRO and efforts are in taking advantage of the benefits of technology for the betterment of humanity. Important initiatives undertaken by ISRO for the development of society include tele-education, telemedicine, Village Resource Center (VRC) and Disaster Management System (DMS) programs. The potential of space technology for national development applications is enormous.
