Energy consumption is an important aspect in our day to day life. The rate of energy consumption is increasing very rapidly every day. If this continues as such, then the world will one day face the energy shortage. So it's time to look for more energy sources instead of non-renewable energy sources and reduce the rate of non-renewable energy consumption. There are many forms of renewable energy sources in the world. The abundant renewable energies include solar energy, tidal energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, etc. One of the most recent energy generation techniques is the generation of osmotic energy.
The Statkraft osmotic energy plant in Tofte, Norway, is the world's first osmotic energy or salinity gradient power plant. The prototype, which is based on osmotic technology, was built and is owned by Statkraft. It is operated by SINTEF Energy Research, a research division of the SINTEF Group.
The prototype was opened on November 24, 2009 by Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. The prototype plant has a capacity designed to generate 10kW of electricity. The fully marketed osmotic plant will be ready by 2015.
The plant generates renewable and emission-free energy and contributes to the production of green energy.
It is estimated that osmotic technology will produce 1,600TWh-1,700TWh per year, representing approximately 13 times the hydroelectric power generated in Norway annually. Of the estimated total osmotic power of 200TWh expected to be generated in Europe, 12TWh will be generated in Norway.
