Abstract
IEEE 802.16 standard and WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access) will standardize and promote wireless broadband as a wireless alternative to digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable that can help remove barriers to broadband access by providing last mile connectivity. The standard reduces costs, improves security, throughput and makes the connection more exible and scalable. WiMAX operates using a base station and a subscriber station with the base station controlling access within a cell. WiMAX could also increase the scope of WiFi hotspots, enabling a user to remain connected in a whole metropolitan area.
