Computer graphics are images and movies created with computers. Typically, the term refers to computer generated image data created with the help of specialized graphics hardware and software. It is a vast and recent area in computer science. The phrase was coined in 1960 by computer science researchers Verne Hudson and William Fetter of Boeing. Often abbreviated as CG, although it is sometimes erroneously called computer generated images (CGI).
Some themes in computer graphics include user interface design, sprite graphics, vector graphics, 3D modeling, shaders, GPU design, implicit surface display with ray tracing and computer vision, among others. The general methodology depends to a large extent on the underlying sciences of geometry, optics and physics.

Computer graphics are responsible for displaying art and image data effectively and meaningfully to the user. It is also used to process image data received from the physical world. The development of computer graphics has had a significant impact on many types of media and has revolutionized animation, films, advertising, video games and graphic design in general.

Today, computer graphics are widespread. Such images are found in and on television, newspapers, weather reports, and in a variety of medical research and surgical procedures. A well-constructed chart can present complex statistics in a way that is easier to understand and interpret. In the media "such graphics are used to illustrate documents, reports, theses," and other presentation materials.

Many tools have been developed to visualize the data. Computer generated images can be classified into several different types: two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D) graphics and animated graphics. As technology has improved, 3D graphics have become more common, but 2D computer graphics are still widely used. Computer graphics have emerged as a sub-field of computer science that studies methods for digitally synthesizing and manipulating visual content. In the last decade, other specialized fields such as visualization of information and scientific visualization have been developed, most related to "the visualization of three-dimensional phenomena (architectural, meteorological, medical, biological, etc.) emphasizing Realistic rendering of volumes, surfaces, lighting sources, etc., perhaps with a dynamic component (time).
