3G spy bot
Robotics is an interesting field where every engineer can showcase his creative and technical skills. Pleasing aspect of robotics is that a robot can be made indigenously by any one. In this competitive world there is need for every enthusiastic, from amateur to professional, to make a simple robot having innovated applications and with robust control.
Mobile phones today became an essential entity for one and all and so, for any mobile based application there is great reception. Wireless controlled robots utilize RF circuits, which had limitations like limited range, limited frequency ranges and controls. But a mobile phone controlled robot can hold up these limitations. It has a robust control, unlimited range (coverage area of the service provider), no fear of interfering with other controllers and we can have as much as 12 controls.
NOW WHAT IS THIS SPYBOT??
The SPYBOT is a robot that can be controlled from anywhere around the world. Just by using a 3G enabled mobile phone, the user can control the robot from anywhere in the world also can see live video transmission from the robot to the controlling mobile.
SO HOW THIS THING WORKS??
The user in order to control the robot should make a video call to the 3G enabled phone attached in the robot, from any another 3G enabled phone, which can send DTMF tones by pressing the numeric buttons and can view the video output. The cell phone in the robot will be kept in auto answer mode. So, after a ring the cell phone accepts the call and starts video transmission. To prevent unauthorized access, a password is set so that the person who knows the password can only access it. Now for the DTMF tones pressed, the tones are fed to the circuit and the corresponding actions are performed.
The invention concerns a method of controlling an electronic device (5) using a wireless mobile device (1) having a display (3), and video capturing unit (4), the method comprising successive steps of: establishing a video call between said mobile device and a remote server (6) such that said remote server receives video images captured by said mobile device; performing image recognition to identify an electronic device in said captured video; detecting motion of said video capturing unit; and transmitting a control signal to said electronic device based on the motion of the video capturing unit.
Signal processing is a very important and broad area in relation to control.
Analysis of systems and signals, detection and estimation of signals are some of the applications of signal processing and are used in the fields of sonar, radar and communications to name a few.The aim of this project is to design a robot capable of being controlled remotely using keypad tones from a mobile phone as shown in Figure 1.Video calling, a 3G based technology, will provide the visual feedback in relation to the robots movements.
This video feedback will allow the operator to view the robots movements in real time.The idea for this project was developed from an interest in the tones produced from a standard telephone’s keypad.These tones known as ‘DTMF tones’ are used for more than just dialling and connecting phone calls.
The technology is used in many different consumer based services to date, including credit card booking lines, automated information services and prepaid phone top up services to name a few.
From an engineering perspective, the technology gives the ability to control machinery from a considerable distance which can prove extremely useful, with DTMF signalling also being a very cost effective method of control.
Claims:
1. A method of controlling an electronic device (5) using a wireless mobile device (1) having a display (3), and video capturing unit (4), the method comprising successive steps of:establishing a video call between said mobile device and a remote server (6) such that said remote server receives video images captured by said mobile device;performing image recognition to identify an electronic device in said captured video;detecting motion of said video capturing unit; andtransmitting a control signal to said electronic device based on the motion of the video capturing unit.
2. The method of any preceding claim, further comprising, before said step of sending a control signal, establishing a connection between the remote server and the electronic device.
3. The method of any preceding claim, comprising, before said motion detection step, transmitting to said mobile device information indicating the commands of said device corresponding to motions of said video capturing unit.
4. The method of any preceding claim, wherein performing image recognition comprises accessing an object database (15) comprising a plurality of object images and/or signatures and matching features of said video images with said object images and/or signatures.
5. The method of any preceding claim, wherein said control signal is transmitted via the Internet.
6. The method of any preceding claim, wherein said motion comprises rotation of the video capturing unit.
7. Use of a wireless mobile device (1) for controlling an electronic device (4), wherein said mobile device comprises a video capturing unit, the use comprising:using said mobile device to establish a video call between the mobile device and a remote server (6);pointing said video capturing unit at the electronic device; andmoving the video capturing unit such that the electronic device moves in the field of view of the video capturing unit to control, based on the movement, the electronic device.
8. A system for controlling an electronic device (5), comprising:a wireless mobile device (1) comprising a video capturing unit (4) arranged to capture video images; anda server (6) capable of communicating with said mobile device in a video call and of receiving said video images, said server comprising:an image recognition unit arranged to identify an electronic device in one or more of said video images;a motion detection unit arranged to detect motion of the video capturing unit; anda control unit arranged to transmit a control signal to said electronic device (5) based on said motion of video capturing unit.
3G Technology - What Is 3G?
3G is the third generation of wireless technologies. It comes with enhancements over previous wireless technologies, like high-speed transmission, advanced multimedia access and global roaming. 3G is mostly used with mobile phones and handsets as a means to connect the phone to the Internet or other IP networks in order to make voice and video calls, to download and upload data and to surf the net.
How is 3G Better? :
3G has the following enhancements over 2.5G and previous networks: Several times higher data speed;
Enhanced audio and video streaming;
Video-conferencing support;
Web and WAP browsing at higher speeds;
IPTV (TV through the Internet) support.

3G Technical Specifications :
The transfer rate for 3G networks is between 128 and 144 kbps (kilobits per second) for devices that are moving fast and 384 kbps for slow ones(like for pedestrians). For fixed wireless LANs, the speed goes beyond 2 Mbps.
3G is a set of technologies and standards that include W-CDMA, WLAN and cellular radio, among others.
3G follows a pattern of G's that started in the early 1990's by the ITU. The pattern is actually a wireless initiative called the IMT-2000 (International Mobile Communications 2000). 3G therefore comes just after 2G and 2.5G, the second generation technologies. 2G technologies include, among others, the Global System for Mobile (GSM) - the famous mobile phone technology we use today. 2.5G brings standards that are midway between 2G and 3G, including the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) etc.
What is Required for Using 3G?:
The first thing you require is a device (e.g. a mobile phone) that is 3G compatible. This is where the name 3G phone comes from - a phone that has 3G functionality; nothing to do with the number of cameras or the memory it has. An example is the iPhone 3G.
