A zoo (abbreviation of zoological garden or zoological park and also called animal park or zoo) is a facility in which animals are housed inside enclosures, are shown to the public and in which they can also reproduce.
The abbreviation "zoo" was used for the first time in the London Zoological Gardens, which opened for scientific study in 1828 and for the public in 1857. The number of collections of major animals open to the public worldwide now exceeds 1,000, around 80 percent of them are in cities. Only in the United States of America, more than 180 million people visit zoos annually.
Zoo animals live in enclosures that often attempt to reproduce their natural habitats or behavior patterns, for the benefit of both animals and visitors. Night animals are often housed in buildings with a cycle of light and dark inverted, that is, only white or dark red lights are lit during the day so that animals are active during visiting hours and brighter lights at night when the animals sleep. Special climatic conditions can be created for animals that live in extreme environments, such as penguins. Special enclosures have also been developed for birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, fish and other forms of aquatic life. Some zoos have exhibits where visitors enter enclosures of non-aggressive species, such as lemurs, marmosets, birds, lizards and turtles. Visitors are asked to follow paths and avoid showing or eating food that animals can catch.
