A shoe is a footwear item designed to protect and comfort the human foot while the user performs various activities. The shoes are also used as a decoration and fashion element. The design of the shoes has varied enormously through time and from one culture to another, with an appearance originally linked to the function. In addition, fashion has often dictated many design elements, as if the shoes have very high or flat heels. Contemporary footwear in the decade of 2010 varies widely in style complexity and cost. The basic sandals can consist of a thin sole and a simple strap and are sold for a low cost. Couture shoes made by famous designers can be made of expensive materials, use complex constructions and sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars per pair. Some shoes are designed for specific purposes, such as boots designed specifically for mountaineering or skiing.
Traditionally shoes have been made of leather, wood or canvas, but in the decade of 2010 more and more are made with rubber, plastics and other materials derived from petrochemicals. Although the human foot adapts to varied terrain and climate conditions, it remains vulnerable to environmental hazards, such as sharp rocks and warm soil, which the shoes protect. Some shoes are used as safety equipment, such as steel-soled boots that are required on construction sites.
