It's an optical disc technology still in the childhood stages of research called as the collinear holography, would soon gain upper hand over the existing technologies like the blue-ray and HD DVD optical disc systems with respect to its storage capacity. Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc technology still in the research stage, which would greatly increase storage over Blue-Ray and HD DVD optical disc systems. It employs a technique known as collinear holography, whereby two lasers, one red and one blue-green, are collimated in a single beam.Current optical storage saves one bit per pulse, and the HVD alliance hopes to improve this efficiency with capabilities of around 60,000 bits per pulse. It is an optical disc technology in the infant state of research, that utilizes the revolutionary collinear holography technique that has one red laser and one blue-green laser collimated into a single beam. The data that is programmed as laser interference fringes from a holographic layer at the top of the disc is read by the blue-green laser where as the servo information from the common CD style aluminum layer near the bottom is read by the red laser, which is used as the reference beam.
