• Not very many submissions (Why?)
– IBM submitted Lucifer
• NSA worked with IBM in redesigning the algorithm

– NBS (NIST) hardware standard in January 77
– ANSI X3.92-1981 (hardware + software)

DES works on bits, or binary numbers--the 0s and 1s common to digital computers. Each group of four bits makes up a hexadecimal, or base 16, number. Binary 0001 is equal to the hexadecimal number 1, binary 1000 is equal to the hexadecimal number 8, 1001 is equal to the hexadecimal number 9, 1010 is equal to the hexadecimal number A, and 1111 is equal to the hexadecimal number F.

To encrypt a text _le and to decrypt the encrypted form of the _le to get the original input text _le. This encryption and decryption is done using the most widely used private key encryption scheme based on data encryption standard (DES) adopted in 1977 by National Bureau of Standards.It was designed by IBM based on their own Luci_er cipher and input from NSA.For DES, data are encrypted in 64-bit blocks using a 56-bit key.
