Often, electric generators are removed from service and reconnected to the electrical system during load variations, emergency interruptions, maintenance, etc.

Before reconnecting the generator to the system at any time, it must be synchronized with the power system network parameters. Incorrect timing can affect the healthy eating system and cause electrical and mechanical transients that can damage the primary motor, generator, transformers and other components of the power system.

The process of matching parameters such as voltage, frequency, phase angle, phase sequence and alternator (generator) waveform or other source with a sound or current power system is called synchronization.

The generator can not supply power to the electrical power system unless its voltage, frequency and other parameters exactly match the grid. Synchronization is performed by controlling the exciter current and the motor speed of the generator.

The need for synchronization arrives, particularly when two or more alternators are working together to supply power to the load. This is because the electrical loads are not constant and vary over time and therefore require the interconnection of two or more alternators operating in parallel to supply higher loads.

The synchronization matches several parameters of an alternator (or generator) with another alternator or with the bus bar. The synchronization process is also called as alternator parallelism.
