Mahatma Gandhi University is an Indian public university related to the state. It was established at Gandhi Jayanti, on October 2, 1983 in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. Mahatma Gandhi University (formerly Gandhiji University), has been approved by UGC and accredited (B +) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Board of India. Only four universities from 15 state universities are qualified to receive NAAC accreditation. The university has about 100 affiliated colleges spread over five districts in the center of Kerala.

Also known as MG University and abbreviated as MGU, the university has grown to become one of India's top 50 universities, ranked by India Today magazine. MGU is the only university in South India selected for the Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative created by the United States Governments for Institutional Partnership Scholarships. This created MGU to form partnership with Brown University, Duke University and the Plymouth State University of the USA.

The University Grants Commission of India does not believe that the names of Indian universities should be unique, so another Mahatma Gandhi state university was established in 2007 in Andhra Pradesh (now in the newly formed state of Telangana) and received recognition UGC. The decision was not challenged by the former Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala. In addition, another private university named Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU-Meghalaya) was established through the 2010 Meghalaya State Legislative Act in Meghalaya and followed by the same private universities named by the State of Uttarakhand in 2007 and the states of Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh .
