A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a manufacturing system in which there is some flexibility that allows the system to react in case of changes, whether predictable or unpredictable. This flexibility is generally considered to fall into two categories, which contain numerous subcategories.

The first category, the flexibility of the machine, covers the ability of the system to be changed to produce new types of products, and the ability to change the order of operations executed in one piece. The second category is called routing flexibility, which consists of the ability to use multiple machines to perform the same operation in one piece, as well as the system's ability to absorb large-scale changes such as volume, capacity or capacity.

Most FMS consists of three main systems. The working machines that are usually automated CNC machines are connected by a material handling system to optimize the flow of parts and the central control computer that controls the material movements and the flow of the machine.

The main advantages of an FMS is its great flexibility in the management of manufacturing resources such as time and effort to manufacture a new product. The best application of an FMS is in the production of small sets of products such as mass production.

Advantages

• Reduction of manufacturing costs
• Lower cost per unit produced,
• Increased labor productivity,
• Increased efficiency of the machine,
• Improved quality,
• Increased system reliability,
• Reduction of inventories of parts,
• Adaptability to CAD / CAM operations.
• Shorter delivery times
• Improved efficiency
• Increase the rate of production

Disadvantages

• The initial installation cost is high,
• Substantial planning
• Qualified labor requirement
• Complicated system
