Silica fume is also referred to as micro silica or condensed silica fume but the term silica fume has been generally accepted. It is a by-product of manufacture of silica and ferrosilicon alloys from high purity quartz and coal in a submerged arc electric furnace. It is reported that the addition of ultra fine particle in HPC improves the strength of concrete. The optimum silica fume proportions in between 20% and 25% by weight of concrete. In it self silica fume does not have any binding properties, but it reacts with calcium hydroxide on hydration of cement and produces the gel i.e. calcium silicatehydrate which has good binding properties. Silica fume has been used in manufacture of high strength concrete.. .

Silica smoke, also known as microsilica, (CAS number 69012-64-2, EINECS number 273-761-1) is an amorphous (non-crystalline) polymorph of silicon dioxide, silica. It is an ultrafine powder collected as a byproduct of the production of silicon and ferrosilicon alloy and consists of spherical particles with an average particle diameter of 150 nm. The main field of application is as pozzolanic material for high performance concrete.

It is sometimes mistaken for fumed silica (also known as pyrogenic silica, CAS number 112945-52-5). However, the production process, particle characteristics and fields of application of fumed silica are all different from those of silicas.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SILICA FUME

1. Physical Properties
o The diameter is from about 0.1 micron to about 0.2 micron
o  Approximately 30,000 m² / kg
o The density varies from 150 to 700 kg / m³
o When its density is approximately 550 kg / m³, it is the most suitable as a concrete additive

2. chemical composition
o  Contains more than 90 percent silicon dioxide
o Other constituents are carbon, sulfur and oxides of aluminum, iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
