India is the main incense-producing country in the world and is a healthy exporter to other   countries (although export sales have been disrupted by rising raw material costs and other factors   such as Western countries buying bars not perfumed) forgeries or imitations). Burning of incense   has taken place in India for thousands of years, and India exported the idea to China and Japan,   and other Asian countries.

Agarbatti are an integral part of any Hindu ritual. During rituals, an incense stick is lit to eliminate   unpleasant odours in the air. It creates the perfect setting for an auspicious ritual filling the air with   a pleasant smell. As they release the smoke, they also act as organic disinfectants that expel   insects.

It has some psychological benefits. The aroma of incense stick has healing power that has a   calming effect on the mind. The soothing effect relaxes the mind and helps to perform rituals with   better concentration. The prayer offered with a quiet mind acts as a process of meditation.  Incense has its own spiritual meaning. The incense stick burns completely in ashes and yet fills   the air with a pleasant smell. This ritual basically denotes the human virtue of sacrificing oneself   for society. Sticks are used as air fresheners during normal days as well as an integral part of all   Hindu ceremonies.
