Importance of Floor

Flooring is fashion,adds character,charm to interior decoration.
Floors must be functional and decorative.
Tremendous area- wear & tear
Needs frequent cleaning,demand hygience.
Retain good appearance through application of floor finishes
Several types of flooring exists

Preparation of Floor

There is underlay or subfloor below the actual floor.
It must be dry,float & level.
It may be solid concrete,stone or tiled but needed damp proofing.
Two types of Sub-floors are Laid :- Suspended Timber & Solid concrete.

Solid Concrete Floors

Concrete is directly onto the hard core and earth at the ground level.
Pre cast concrete slabs are used in multistoryed buildings.
These floors are given cement screed layer on top to smooth surface on which flooring material may be laid.
It provides stable floor,and suitable for any floor material.

As they give one surface to be cleaned

Make for easy furniture arragement

COMFORT

Soft or resilient floor are comfortable to walk but extremely tiring to people who continuously walk eg. Hk staff.
Hard surface :- offer less heat and sound insulation
Noisy flooring may cause disturbance and discomfort to adjacent room.
Slipperiness – may lead to discomfort and needs more care.

Durability

Without wear and tear in area ,flooring may become tired looking.
Grits, cuts, spillage of water,grease, food acids , cigaarette burns,dragging of furniture and use of trolly are other factors.
Hard floor like quarry tiles,clay tiles and stone last longer but durability related to length of time a floor retains its appearance.
Life expectancy – floor needs to be durable but its not same for all areas,like for kitchen it is more and many years but guest room floor ,it is 7-8 yrs,bar its 2-3 yrs.
Safety – precaution and training helps to avoid accidents.
Ease of cleaning – easy cleaning will help to maintain floors.
Cost – this may limit the choice of flooring, true cost is initial cost for laying,maintenece cost includes.
